Doggy

Mon May 18, 2009, 5:21 PM

For those of you who didn't know, I have a dog: [link]

She's an Alaskan Malamute, and her name is Mocha. She's five years old now.

She had always been healthy until this past March when she started limping. We took X-rays, and she has arthritis. So we got her on anti-inflammatory medication for it, and she seemed almost back to normal.

Then some time in April, she started having stomach problems. It kept getting worse. :\ She has lost 17lbs (from 104 to 87) between mid-April and now. She's vomiting twice a day, she can barely eat, and her legs are getting weaker. And she's EXTREMELY lethargic. Our vet, who knows Mocha fairly well by now, actually asked us if we gave her tranquilizer because she was so groggy... No, she's like that 24/7 nowadays; she's just that lethargic.

The worst part is that we don't know what's causing all this. We did multiple X-rays for various checks, bloodwork, ACTH, ultrasound, and EVERYTHING is normal. Biopsy of her stomach lining is our next option (she'll be sedated -- and they'll use the opportunity for a neurologist checkup too, to see if there's anything abnormal with her brains/nerve system), but somehow I'm... not expecting much. I have this feeling that it's not going to bring up any useful results.

I don't want to ask for sympathy posts. I just wanted to give you guys an update, especially those of you who have been wondering why I haven't posted any new Haru-Sari pages recently. I am spending a lot of time nursing the dog, keeping a watch in case she needs anything. I don't know how long she'll be around...

I am so sorry you're going through this, our puppy ([link]) had some horrible health issues, but thankfully we get them under control, and he lived a good long life (almost 14 years).

I'm not sure where you live, but [link] is fantastic, they saved our dog's life. Literally.

I'm sorry to hear it, I'll be praying for Mocha. I know what its like to have a hurt pet, and its very taxing. Hang in there!

Aww, I really really hope she turns out okay.
I had a pet bunny named Mocha who got really sick and... well he didn't pull through. I was really really sad for a while, and I still miss him, so...
Good luck, kay?

Oh my, your poor doggy! I hope you`ll find out what it is soon and that you can help her. Our dog is a boxer and has something similar to athritis. She broke her leg when she was about a month old that`s why the people where she lived before sold her to us. And because of her broken leg she`s got something similar to athritis (I don`t remember the english term for it...-.-)But now she`s well again.

Wish you the best of luck!

It may have begun as side effects to her arthritis medication perhaps? Often times pharmaceuticals - especially anti-inflammatories - can have very negative effects on the digestive tract. For example if one takes regular aspirins too often it can cause stomach bleeding.

I'm kindof a hippie and I work at a health food store... so I know a teensy bit about this kind of thing.

If this is the case, that would possibly explain the vomiting and also the weight loss (if she's not eating because it causes her pain).

A good natural anti-inflammatory (I don't recall negative side-effects on this one off-hand, but research carefully!) is plain regular turmeric - that spice that gives curry powder it's yellow hue. Also bromelain (pineapple enzyme) is good. I don't know if these are safe necessarily for dogs, but it's worth a shot to talk to the vet about this. Also she might need some probiotics.

I'm not a doctor, and certainly not a vet, but I thought thinking about some of this might help you figure out what's wrong. Good luck.

You don't want to ask for sympathy, but you're gonna get it anyway.

I'm really sorry to hear that. ): I can't even imagine what that must be like.
My 10 year old dog is finally starting to limp with arthritis as well and just the other night he got incredibly sick, so that probably means he can't fight off stuff like he use to.
But. Compared to Mocha... I really hope she gets better.

She's so young! =/ Poor thing.
Hope the scan comes back with promise; not negative, with all the trouble you've had finding what it is, but with something mild and treatable.

Awe that's so terrible to hear. I'll keep her in my prayers. She's such a beautiful malamute too. I know my Kakashi is around the same age and I'd be so sad if that were happening. My mom went through a similar situation with her maltese--EXTREMELY sweet dog and after we had her 2 years she got some condition where her body was killing her own white blood cells.. no number of blood transfusions would help and she passed away after about a year of being lethargic and sick. I really hope they can find the cause for Mocha's sickness and that they can cure it
