How I made this picture: [link]

Underneath the embellished silken cover, there is something simple, yet extraordinarily beautiful, waiting to come out.

A beautiful girl swathed in decorations, with a butterfly perched on her. I wanted both the girl and the butterfly to be mostly white and simple. It's an interesting twist, isn't it? That the butterfly is simpler than the cocoon?

Getting the right sketch took an ungodly number of trial and error (and thus an ungodly amount of time -- like seriously ahhhhhhhh). I got a lot of decent sketches out of it, but none of them fit the message I wanted...

Finally, I got a sketch I liked. Then came the coloring process, which turned out to be another uphill battle. D: I've stared at this picture for so long, and I can't really tell if this is an improvement compared to my past works. I hope it is!

In any case, it's done, and I hope you all find something to like about it. I'm particularly pleased with how the colors on her lips came out.

Photoshop CS4 from scratch~

You may have put an ungodly amount of time and effort to this but it's definitely worth it, since the result is... godly. Okay I shouldn't throw in too many religious words. But seriously, this is so beautiful! I love the serene atmosphere on this picture, and the girl and the butterfly are really pretty. And also, the whole idea and contrast are interesting.
Amazing as always.

I like how half of her frame is covered in shadow, it lends a nice contrast to the side covered in light. It has this very gentle, ethereal feel to it.

I especially love the colors that you used! The blues and violets, and the way you detailed the fabric and how it rests on her body makes it pop, and I like the details of her hair, and the butterfly is a nice touch! Very soft and comforting, I felt. Symbolic almost. :)

Although I kind of thought it was Micaiah in this pic at first. Ahahaha...

XD I think you're the second person to bring up Micaiah here. I blame FE10's repeated throwing-around of the phrase "the silver-haired maiden."

I know someone who is always reminded of Terra/Tina from FF6 every time he sees a green-haired girl wearing red!

The folds on the cocoon are so beast. I love that you can actually see where the arms are at behind all the silk. I'm so amazed at its realism...

I also like the tranquility her expression & the butterfly symbolize. :)

I really love the details in this one with the colours and her expression. She seems to not have a care in the world and just sleep through everything.
the only thing I can point out that I think should be fixed somehow is a few of the light strains in her hair in the shadow. I feel that they should be slightly darker to match with it acctually be in the shadow.

and somehow she reminds me of Luna Lovegood o:

I'm glad you like it! The unrealistic lightness of the strands were intentional, though. I feel they add some surreal-ness to the picture. :)

Please continue to share your suggestions with my future works, though, when/if you have them. I may not always agree, but I will always at least consider it.

I like the pose, and especially the cloth. The patterns you create are lovely. I'd like to wear them! The figure reminds me of one of my characters, except mine has straight hair. I may have to take some inspiration from this for my character's costume. :3

I'm pretty fond of the designs/colours on the satiny thing, since you asked :A

It is very nice, I have to say. I kind of have a preference for the art you produce purely for the sake of artyness. When you try to capture X copyrighted character right or portray one of your OCs right (which basically amounts to the same thing, tying yourself down), I feel you're handicapping yourself. We need more keiiiiworks like these.

On a second thought, I think it's not so much that drawing pre-existing characters are limiting my art, but that I tend to go "eh, it's just ___, I'm not going to spend any more time on this" with those. Webcomic pages are the most obvious examples since I need to get them done on time.

There are some fan- and OC-art that I put in some real effort, such as [link] or [link] and I feel they're representative of my best at the time.

(Speaking of which, wow, I improved quite a bit since Ever So Gently. @_@ It's been almost exactly one year. This gives me some hope!)

I completely missed that Kimry was an established character. That one was actually grouped in the 'art for the sake of artyness' in my head :^

I guess it's just me, then. Whenever I set about trying to purposefully draw something, a good 40% of the best parts of the image get shaved away/cropped out/reworked because they don't feel in-character. In some extreme cases I set out to draw someone and they quickly morph into something more appropriate for another character, but I'm hardly a measuring stick as far as artists go x:

That's precisely why I go through so many different sketches before choosing one to color. I need a sketch that not only works really well as a piece of art, but also fits the character/ concept/ whatever it is that I'm trying to draw.

For me, less-than-best occurs when I give up or compromise at some point. D:

I can't remember the last time I actually finished a picture that existed for its own sake. The most recent example I remember is all the way from 2005, but I think there's been one or two between that and now... [link] <--- was actually the result of trying to find the right sketch for a specific idea/scene, but I decided this looked good on its own so I finished it.

When I think "art for its own sake," I think of fine art -- i.e. works done purely for the sake of aesthetics. Since the most difficult and the most time-consuming part of this picture was getting the communication right, I'd say this is not an art for its own sake, but an art for the sake of the message. :)

Ah, yes. It's usually the cocoon that's boring, and the butterfly that is colorful.

Maybe this is to represent the journey of self to find the inner truth and one's purest form? We wrap ourselves, daily, in cocoons of unecessary clothes, food, power and money. Vanity and pride reign over us. But in due time, we shed that, and find the white, pure self that was the core of our existence all along.

That's how I see your work. Correct me if I'm wrong, though. I just love this concept.

This is really good, it feels so serene. As a side note she looks sort of like Luna Lovegood from Harry potter which now makes it seem like it's part of one of her weird dreams.

It's very beautiful.
